About

Hi, I'm Jo and this is my blog, Steamed Broccoli.  I'm a New York City resident, living in a city full of fabulous people, places, restaurants and sights.  I work full time and struggle balancing work life, a social life, and staying healthy.

Ever since I can remember I've struggled with my weight.  I love food- cooking it, eating it, reading about it, looking at it.  When I was six years old, I remember playing on the playground at our school and a mother commenting to my Mom "Wow, she's really slimmed down."  Who says that to a six year old?  For a long time, it was never about being healthy, it was about getting THIN.  Being as thin as my sisters, as thin as my friends, as thin as the girls in the magazines.  I tried many diets: eating only apples and water, skipping meals, eating one meal a day, eating the least amount possible, purging, starving...you get the idea.  Once I got to college, I stopped caring, put on the Freshman Fifteen (plus another Fifteen).  Through college, heartbreaks, and life, I managed to drop thirty pounds, regain it, and start all over.

In July 2006, I joined Weight Watchers, which I was a member of until January 2010.  WW helped me lose 31lbs, get in shape, and learn how to eat properly.  So, why did I quit?  For about two years my weight stayed the same and I still wasn't at the WW goal weight they wanted for me.  I wasn't happy staying where I was and have decided to take things into my own hands.

I began training for the New York City Half Marathon in January 2010 and ran it on March 21, 2010.  Not content with running just 13.1 miles, I've decided to set a goal to run the NYC Marathon in November 2011.  Until then, I will be working on running 9 races with New York Road Runners (4 completed so far) to guarantee me a spot in the 2011 race.

Why this blog and why Steamed Broccoli?

This is nothing more than for me to document my success, my failures, training plans and meals.  It is also meant to inspire those who also hope to lose weight, get healthy and fit, and for those who can relate to my struggle.  Steamed Broccoli happens to be my favorite vegetable- it's quick and easy to make and goes with everything (sort of like your Little Black Dress of vegetables).

While I can promise many entries about training (I'm planning a number of races and relays in 2011), this is also about doing all these things while working full time and having a social life (ahem, while enjoying myself and adult beverages while I'm at it).  Surely, there will also be lots of personal stuff- like being a single gal in New York City.  (Though I can also promise it's nothing glamorous.)
So, there it is.  Have fun reading old posts and new posts and going on this journey with me.
